Joining Jesus in Mission to Our Circle of Influence

  • Where you live, learn, work and play …

  • To the people, place or pain God has called you …

  • As you connect, eat and do life with others …

Be a Blessing

Genesis 12:1-3

The LORD had said to Abram, “Leave your native country, your relatives, and your father’s family, and go to the land that I will show you. I will make you into a great nation. I will bless you and make you famous, and you will be a blessing to others. I will bless those who bless you and curse those who treat you with contempt. All the families on earth will be blessed through you.”

  • Let’s take a step back and look at a tool that many have found helpful in developing a missional lifestyle.

  • If we are to Join Jesus in Mission to Our Circle of Influence, what could that look like?

  • How can we incorporate See-Pray-Show-Tell into our everyday lives?

  • Here are the B.L.E.S.S. Missional Rhythms:

BE IN PRAYER

As you see people with the compassion of Jesus, pray for them.

Here’s a sample missional prayer:

Father, I pray for _______'s salvation. Help me to live a consistent and attractive Christlike life around _______. Show me _______’s needs so that I can serve him/her with Your love. Do something in _______’s life that can only be explained by Your presence and power. Deepen our relationship together. Open doors for me to have spiritual conversations with _______ and help me to share the Good News of Jesus with him/her. Overcome Satan's blinding of  _______'s heart so that he/she will repent of his/her sin, believe in Jesus as Savior and follow Him as Lord with others.

The Bless Every Home App is a helpful tool for staying consistent in prayer for others. See PRAY for more details.

LISTEN

Pay attention. Ask good questions and practice active listening. Listen to people AND listen to the Spirit. Listen between the lines. Listen for needs. Listen for opportunities to show the love of Jesus.

The best conversations begin with good questions and continue with even better listening. For example, you could ask:

  • How are you today? You seem frustrated. Are you okay?

  • You have a son or a daughter, right? How are they doing? How’s parenting going for you?

Or here’s a good question:

  • “How can I pray for you?”

It’s amazing how many people will allow you to pray for them and how deeply they’ll appreciate you asking. Listen to their request and then pray right then and there for them.

EAT

Jesus, so to speak, eats His way through the Gospels. He eats with a lot of people and all kinds of people. That’s because eating together forms relationships. In fact, our word “companion” comes from the Latin com (with) and panis (bread). Break bread with people and share life together. As you eat, ask lots of question and listen well. Ask questions of about life and backgrounds, hopes and fears.

SERVE

As you listen to people and eat with people, you’ll become aware of their needs. Serve them with the love of Jesus. Ask the Spirit to empower you to be a blessing in their lives.

A wonderful way to serve someone is to pray for them. When you become aware of a need, ask:

  • Can I pray for that need?

Once again, pray for the need right there and then with them.

See SHOW for how to practically, sacrificially and supernaturally serve others.

STORY

As you listen and eat and serve you will gain the right to share your story and the Story of Jesus. Because Jesus is at the center of your story, you’ll be able to naturally share how Jesus actuality plays the lead roll in your life.

Here are some questions to get spiritual conversations going:

  • Do you have a spiritual background?

  • What have you embraced from your spiritual background?

  • What have you rejected?

  • What do you think of Jesus?

Ask good questions and be a good listener. You just might find that your good question gets a good question in return. Like:

  • What’s your spiritual background?

  • What have you embraced from your spiritual background?

  • What have you rejected?

  • What do you think of Jesus?

If you ask good questions and really listen to their story, you’ll earn the right to share your story and Jesus’ Story.

And don’t overlook what may be the most direct question of all. It’s both obvious and disarming at the same time.

  • Has anyone ever explained to you the Good News of Jesus?

Once again, you’ll be surprised how many people will say, “Actually, no. No one has really explained that to me. I have some ideas, but I would like to know.”

See TELL for how to share your story and Jesus’ Story
