Week 9 - Day 4

THE STORY

Mission

DISCIPLE-MAKING DISCIPLES

At the beginning of Jesus’ Mission, we read …

Matthew 4:18-19 (NLT)

One day as Jesus was walking along the shore of the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers—Simon, also called Peter, and Andrew—throwing a net into the water, for they fished for a living. Jesus called out to them, “Come, follow me.”

Then at the end of His Mission before ascending back to heaven, we read …

Matthew 28:16-20 (NIV)

Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted. Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

The first words Jesus spoke to His disciples were, “Come, follow me.” And the last words Jesus spoke before ascending back to heaven were essentially, “Now go and make followers of me.” That’s what a disciple is.

Being a follower or a disciple of Jesus is being His student. Or better yet, being a follower or a disciple of Jesus is like being His apprentice or intern.

Luke 6:40 (NET)

A disciple is not greater than his teacher, but everyone when fully trained will be like his teacher.

  • What is the purpose and the process of being Jesus’ apprentice or intern?

  • Why does Jesus expect obedience to His commands?

  • Why does Jesus expect His disciples to make more and more disciples?

You Never Really Learn Something Until You Have To Teach It.
  • How does this saying apply to being a disciple-making disciple?

  • How do you personally feel about being a disciple-making disciple? What concerns you about it? What excites you about it?

In the next Map called The Relationship, we’re going to take a deeper dive into how we can grow as Jesus’ disciples. Then in the Map after that called The Mission, we will explore how we can partner with the Holy Spirit and each other in making disciples for Jesus who make disciples for Jesus who make disciples for Jesus ….

  • In light of what you have discovered through the Bible readings and your personal reflections, how will you respond? Finish this sentence: I will …
