Week 7 - Day 4

THE STORY

Rescue (New Testament)

TRUTH

We know that Jesus was anointed by the Spirit to be our Rescuer, but what was His mission? Jesus came to reestablish God’s Kingdom on earth by:

  1. Revealing the truth

  2. Setting the captives free

  3. Dying for our sins

We’ll take a day to look at each of these.

John 8:42-44 (NLT)

Jesus told them, “If God were your Father, you would love me, because I have come to you from God. I am not here on my own, but he sent me. Why can’t you understand what I am saying? It’s because you can’t even hear me! For you are the children of your father the devil, and you love to do the evil things he does. He was a murderer from the beginning. He has always hated the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, it is consistent with his character; for he is a liar and the father of lies.

John 10:10 (NIV)

The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy.

  • Satan is on a mission. What is the weapon of his mission? What is the purpose of his mission?

John 8:31-32 (NLT)

Jesus said to the people who believed in him, “You are truly my disciples if you remain faithful to my teachings. And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

John 10:10 (NIV)

The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.

  • Jesus is on a mission too. What is the weapon of His mission? What is the purpose of His mission?

John 1:1-2,14,17-18 (NIV)

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, who is himself God and is in closest relationship with the Father, has made him known.

  • Why does Jesus know so much about God?

John 14:6-9 (NIV)

Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you really know me, you will know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.”

Philip said, “Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us.”

Jesus answered: “Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father.

  • Jesus doesn’t just know the truth or teach the truth. In this passage, Jesus says He actually IS The Truth. How can Jesus say this?

  • Do you believe this?

  • What truth from The Story so far as impacted you the most? Why?

  • In light of what you have discovered through the Bible readings and your personal reflections, how will you respond? Finish this sentence: I will …
